WiFi Cameras
- iStopMotion Remote Camera for iPhone
Download the free app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and use the devices camera via WiFi for making stop motion movies. Also features remote capture via an attached headset and live preview.
- Logitech Broadcaster
This is a nice camera as it comes with a stand that is partly suitable for stop motion animation, although it can easily be moved unintentionally since the stand is held in place by an easily adjustable magnet.
USB Webcams
- General Information
There are many USB webcams that work with a Mac and, generally, if you can see the app in QuickTime player, it should also be available in iStopMotion.
Firewire Cameras
- General Information
Video cameras equipped with a Firewire port (aka i.Link or IEEE1394) usually supply a live video signal to the host when connected. iStopMotion has been originally designed to be used with Firewire cameras. Recently, camera vendors have all but stopped to make cameras with a Firewire connector and newer Macs do not have a Firewire port any more, so using Firewire is not recommended if you are looking to purchase new equipment.
HDMI Cameras
- Important Information
Many modern video cameras sport an HDMI connector. To use this, you’d need an HDMI video grabber that works with the Mac and iStopMotion. Due to issues with the OS, this is currently not supported. The HDMI connector present on some Mac models is an output only, meant for connecting a display or TV. You can plug in a cable between your Mac and your Camera, but no video will be transmitted.
Digital Still Cameras
- General Information
Many digital still cameras support a USB connection to a computer to download images taken with the camera. Usually, this USB connection can not be used for anything else. Some cameras support a protocol called PTP that allows the computer to control the camera to a certain extend. iStopMotion supports the use of this protocol with a special animation mode. Using this mode you have to make do without the live preview ghosting that is the biggest feature of iStopMotion, so we do not recommend it. If you already have a digital still camera which you want to use due to lack of alternatives, we recommend that you download a demo version of iStopMotion and test if it works with your camera.
