FotoTV Goes Live with BoinxTV at photokina 2010

A highly anticipated bi-annual event held in Cologne, Germany, photokina is the world’s largest photography and imaging trade fair in the industry. A product of Koelnmesse, Cologne’s largest trade fair company, photokina attracts an immense gathering of professional and semi-professional photographers, and imaging aficionados alike. The fair brings together new products, trends and the world’s leading photo and imaging brands for an unparalleled, virtually eye-popping event line-up. In 2010, photokinaTV, the podcast of photokina, hit the airwaves with official TV partner, FotoTV, the world’s largest WebTV station for photography. Looking to make “podcast magic” with a smooth and fresh delivery method, German IPTV 2009 Award-winner, FotoTV, turned to Boinx Software and their revolutionary live production, “studio-in-a-box” software – BoinxTV. Serving as the technical power behind FotoTV, BoinxTV delivered daily photo news, trends, products, interviews, and highlights of the 6-day photo-bonanza - via photokinaTV - to imaging enthusiasts all over the world via a tailored and tantalizing online podcast.

The Studio-in-a-Box Broadcasts from the FotoTV Glass-Box Studio

Presented with the opportunity to deliver groundbreaking photo news and trends to millions of viewers around the world, FotoTV sought a modest alternative to the complexities and nuances of most higher priced production machines. Utilizing Boinx’s unique “studio-in-a-box” production platform in the past to create various online photography news broadcasts and podcasts such as FotoTV.News and FotoTV.Tech, the WebTV station was familiar with the BoinxTV workflow and unparalleled technical support. It was a natural choice for FotoTV to leverage BoinxTV’s all-in-one production capabilities for this special project, offering the official photokina 2010 TV partner an economical and efficient way to achieve superb, professional podcast results with the added bonus of zero post-production efforts and trustworthy support.

FotoTV and BoinxTV worked together to produce “podcast magic” in a spectacular glass-box studio located in the center of the photokina 2010 trade show floor. Open to attendees and viewers on one side, and surrounded by glass walls on three; BoinxTV and its powerful workflow served as the focal point of the entire show – gathering together each and every interview, highlight, new product, and trend to form the photokinaTV podcast.

The Debut Workflow

Although BoinxTV made their “big” debut at photokina, there was nothing “big” at all about the BoinxTV setup and workflow. In fact, the Apple Design Award-winning product requires the utmost minimal setup, yet will magically transform any Mac into a full television production studio for creating live to disk, live to stage – and in this case - live to internet video.

FotoTV operated BoinxTV on a Mac Pro with a Quadcore processor, running Snow Leopard, with an ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphic card and additional FireWire PCI cards. An extensive set of more than 50 layers in BoinxTV lets users switch cameras with only the keyboard, and add media files, lower thirds, logos, and much more, all in real time while recording with absolutely no post-production necessary. Although you don’t need specially trained people to manipulate these layers, our own Bastian Wölfle was stationed in the glass-box studio to help apply them to the video feed. With just a few buttons, Bastian was able to adjust the settings to control various layers, including FotoTV favorites - the Lower Third, and Station Logo. As the feed came pouring in, the video that BoinxTV created in real time was output on the Internet within just minutes. FotoTV then uploaded the BoinxTV-created podcasts to a video platform in order to reach its total potential audience.

BoinxTV provided FotoTV with a streamlined workflow and stunning finished results at photokina 2010. From input, to production, to output, BoinxTV’s minimal setup, easy to use interface, and zero post-production requirements delivered a creative and informative podcast to millions of photo and image enthusiasts and professionals all over the world.
