Boinx Holiday Treat Recipe...Yum!

by Janice -

Who doesn't love a holiday treat? Here at Boinx we have a special few that are absolute fan favorites. For the next four Sundays, I will be posting our most loved holiday treat recipes along with an iStopMotion 'how to' movie.

First up is the "WECKMÄNNER" cookie. The tradition of this cookie dates back to the medieval ages with its roots in the adoration of the Christian Bishop Nikolaus of Myra. The Bishop was depicted in the original cookies which were first baked for St. Nikolaus Day using a sweetened yeast dough. In modern times, parents bake this holiday treat together with their kids who get to dream up their own cookie character.

You will need the following ingredients:

  • 600 g flour
  • 40 g yeast
  • 250 ml milk (warm)
  • 100 g butter
  • 60 g sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • a dash of salt
  • 1 pack of vanilla sugar
  • raisins
  • egg yolk

The cookie dough is created in two steps - pre-dough and dough. To make the pre-dough, heat up the milk and pour it into a bowl. Add in yeast and 20g of sugar. Stir the ingrediants until they are blended and let it sit for 20 minutes in a warm place.

Step 2 - the dough. Melt the butter and mix it in the pre-dough along with the eggs, salt, sugar, and remaining flour. The dough should be smooth after you are done mixing.

Cover the dough with a cloth and let it sit for another 15 minutes. Roll out the dough (about 1 cm thick) and use your favorite cookie cutter to cut out figures or hand cut the dough for your very own design. In our version, we used the raisins to form eyes and a mouth, but you can use your favorite topping. Cover cut outs with the egg yolk (make sure you stir the egg yolk before covering the dough). And once again, let it sit for 15 minutes.

Pre-heat the oven to 210°C/410°F. Bake the treats for 10-15 minutes and remove when golden brown.
