There are tons of nice things about iStopMotion, FotoMagico and other Boinx Software products to be said and the backlog of postings for this weblog is phenomenal. But, it is all marketing, the cool factor is clearly lacking. So we are doing a couple of things: We are going to introduce new categories and new posters. All of the team will be able to post stuff in the future, once I figure out how to connect the Blojsom weblog engine with OpenDirectory. There is help, but it it remains a challenge... Onward!

The Educational Software Preview Guide Consortium deems iStopMotion worthy of inclusion in the 2005 Educational Software Preview Guide (ESPG). The ESPG lists "favorably reviewed technology resources for instructional use in preschool through Grade 12." (see "What is ESPG?").

Ani-mats are a cool invention by ICT Links. They provide a guide for making great clay figures while being an easy to clean mat for modeling the figures on, protecting whatever surface lies beneath. ICT Links' Deborah Stewart made one especially for Boinx Software with the clay figure from the iStopMotion web page. Download here (1.8 MB JPG), print out on an A3 color printer and laminate.

Achim's got 1year old son, Leo, who likes to play on the keyboard and delete dad's important emails. So Achim set out to create a special keyboard where his son could play and create sounds with Apple's GarageBand with only the right keys available from an old Apple USB keyboard. Now, the thing is working, but Leo still likes playing on daddy's keyboard better...

Janet Mobley reviews FotoMagico for "TMUG Insider", the Tri-Valley Macintosh Users Group (Pleasanton, CA) newsletter, June 2005 issue:

I had spent about 12 hours of time and several pots of coffee in two evening sessions in the hotel room producing this overnight sensation. My Titanium 15" laptop had enough RAM (1 GHz) and robustness to create and playback a full-screen, stereo-soundtrack-ed, smooth-moving, judiciously panned and zoomed, FotoMagico slideshow. Much easier to use than iMovie, and in my opinion more intuitive, FotoMagico costs all of $79 for the downloaded software and is well worth the brief learning curve. [...] It takes slideshows to new heights of control and production speed.

George Rota's Students were busy creating animations with iStopMotion. He writes:

The kids loved working with iStopMotion! It is so easy to use. I gave each class a computer, a tripod and movie camera and they went to work. I gave a 45 minute introduction and off they went planning and creating! I love their projects. We will be doing this again next year plus this summer I will be co-teaching an animation class with my son.

"I don't get the time to use iStopMotion as often as I should but when I do, I really enjoy it. There's still nothing else like it." Jerry King Musser posts a new flick called "Television Journalism" (requires QuickTime 7, 10MB H.264) at his website. Very cool.

Half the team is safely back home, the other half is still in the USA for a bit of holiday. A very interesting WWDC2005. Very productive. You will see the fruits of the teams work appear soon in the Boinx products.

Mark Pentleton notifies us of the availability of the movies from the Film Festival of Partners in Excellence. The animations were made during a 3 day residential course where all participants (native English speakers living in Scotland) had to speak in French the entire time, while creating their stories and models. Mark writes:

First of all, thanks for a fantastic product in the shape of iStopmotion Pro which we continue to use in our language learning project. We've been using digital video for 5 years and we made our first films with iStopmotion last summer.

Partners in Excellence aims to give young people learning foreign languages more opportunities to practise their language skills in exciting and innovative contexts.
