Last week, I attended and spoke at the O'Reilly Mac OS X Conference. A great show. The best Mac geek party. I got to hear great talks by Andy Ihnatko (who is about the best geek speaker I ever saw), David Pogue (a true magician and very spell binding speech), Andy Herzfeld (I'll buy his book) and Stewart Copeland (no desciption necesssary). The best about this show is that there is a real dialogue going on between the speakers and the audience. I also got to meet and speak with a lot of interesting people. And Boinx Software won the Mac OS X Innovators Contest 2004 International Category with FotoMagico. Very cool.

maximage.jpgStéphan and Samuel St-Denis are PlaymoMovie makers calling themselves MaxImage. Their french site phanault.com contains a couple of shorts created with iStopMotion and Playmobil characters. Lots of police in there... Created with a Sony camera, iStopMotion and Final Cut Pro on a Macintosh G4 Dual 450. The sound track of the movie "Roule pas trop vite" shows that they had a lot of fun...

SpeakerI will be at the O'Reilly Mac OS X Conference at Santa Clara this week, joining a panel of Mac OS X developers including Dan Woods, Brent Simmons, Wil Shipley, Steve Dekorte and Steve Gehrmann talking about "How To Run Your Own Software Business". On Wednesday, I will be giving a session called "How Not to Write Great Mac Software" about how iStopMotion was developed and what lessons were learned. I expect the conference to be very interesting. The session line up is phenomenal and in contrast to the Apple WWDC, it will be an actual discussion of the hip and hype topics between attendees and speakers. Let's see if we can get a dialog going in my sessions.

gogently.jpgUsing Boinx FotoMagico, Larry Klug created a very emotional slideshow as a tribute to his Dad and posted a short "Making of" to his website. "Of all slideshow applications that I demonstrated for different Apple user groups for the last nine years, FotoMagico is the best," says Larry. "It's the Final Cut Pro of professional slideshow presentation software."

Macworld November 2004 edition has a short review of iStopMotion and awards it 4 1/2 mice:

iStopMotion takes you beyond the ordinary with its two modes: Stop Motion, where you animate objects incrementally and capture a single frame at a time; and Time Lapse, where a frame is shot at an interval (such as every minute), resulting in sped-up footage of things like clouds rolling by or flowers blooming. [...] The only drawback I encountered was choppy playback when previewing the movie.

This has been fixed in Version 1.5.

danceofangel.jpgCody Deegan from Nevada produces a feature film "Dance of the Angel" in his spare time. A very interesting project. A small demo clip can be downloaded here. It makes use of iStopMotion's stop motion features as well as the time lapse with an interesting overlay effect. Cody writes: "I do have an animation scene I need to do for my movie very soon and needed some software to shoot it. I studied Traditional Character Animation at CALARTS in the early 90's and am looking forward to using my skills again. I have also just been hired to create a 5-minute animation piece for a cherokee man named Willy Whitefeather about his teachings of peace and Native American symbology. I believe I will be using iStopMotion to shoot all of it as well. I played with the software for about 5 minutes last night and felt confident that it was going to be just what I need."

Just a quick pitch, because it deserves it: Blojsom powers this blog. We are doing this because Blojsom will be part of Mac OS X Tiger Server and we hope to be able to leverage this knowledge in the consulting part of our business. David Czarnecki is a very responsive developer: On the mailing list we asked for help on how to create an archive for this weblog and David added the functionality within an hour after receiving the request. Top grades for that!
