With Macworld | iWorld 2012 right around the corner, we’re pleased to announce that Gordon Straub, Director/Producer of Moose Movies, will be presenting at the Apple event. At just 17 years old, Gordon’s Tech Talk, Get Started or Improve Your Techniques Making Stop-Action Movies with iStopMotion, will, as you may have already guessed, address helpful tips regarding the creation of stop motion animated movies using Boinx’s very own iStopMotion.

Attendees will not only learn everything about using iStopMotion software, but also the ins and outs of stop motion basics – how to model clay characters, build a stage, use a blue screen to superimpose backgrounds, develop storylines and scripts, and record or create a soundtrack for the final piece. Gordon will also be handing out clay to attendees for a more interactive experience. And because we’re so excited to have an iStopMotion expert advocating our software at the premier Apple event of the year, we’ll be raffling off one license of iStopMotion Home and one for iStopMotion for iPad at Gordon’s Tech Talk!

A multi-talented musician (he plays the double bass!) and artist, Gordon, a Danville, California native, has produced claymation shorts for the Town of Danville and the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District (using iStopMotion of course). His work with Danville’s Street Smarts program in which his animated penguins discussed street safety tips won him an award from the Town of Danville. The Animation Tests on Gordon’s YouTube channel feature some quirky characters and show off a series of animation techniques, which he’ll be sharing with the crowd at Macworld. Stay tuned for a more in-depth animation from Gordon that is sure to show off all of his skills in one extensive stop motion film.

Gordon will also be exhibiting his stop motion skills at the Boinx booth (818 – 2J) in the Mobile Apps Showcase, where he will give a live demo of iStopMotion for iPad. Don’t miss out – register for passes to Macworld | iWorld 2012 here. We’ll keep you posted on the exact time of Gordon’s demo and presentation. See you there!

There are things in life that, although you see them coming, still hit you like a brick wall. And although you were sort of thinking you'd have enough time to deal with them, when they happen, you realize that you are in fact very ill prepared.

One day in early 1977, my father met Steve Jobs. And it was not just a brief handshake, either. The encounter over lunch led to the first Apple 1 computers being brought to Europe, to the basement of my family's house, where my father had his microcomputer lab. I was 7 years old. The miraculous machine captured my imagination and has not let go of it since. Eventually the passion ignited in me and my brother that year led to the creation of Boinx Software, more than 20 years later.

Letter from Steve, pre-email. Photo taken with iPhone 4S

The similarities between Steve Jobs and my dad don't end with both being fascinated by technology and both having a profound influence on my life and my company. In April of this year, my father passed away. Incidentally, he died of the same cause as Steve Jobs, respiratory arrest caused by a metastatic tumor in the lungs. Like Steve Jobs, he did what he loved until just days before his death. Like Steve Jobs, what he loved was driving innovation at the company he founded. I was lucky to be at his bedside when he died.

When I saw Steve Jobs take the stage for the keynote at WWDC 2011 back in June, I immediately knew it would be his last keynote. Not only did he look like my father did just weeks before his death, he also had the same weak, almost squeaky voice. That morning I pondered whether I had seen enough Stevenotes and whether it would be worthwhile to jump through the hoops that Apple hands out before a keynote, including long waiting lines and "People Management" like in Kindergarten. But when I saw Steve, I was glad I bothered to take that last chance to see the genius in action once more.

On October 5th, 2011, at 3pm I was sitting in a meeting room at 3 Infinite Loop in Cupertino, CA. I had come more than 5500 miles from my office to demo our latest creation, codenamed Ziegenbart, to a couple of Apple people. They liked it very much and so I left in a good mood. The weather, cold and rainy in the morning, had turned into a bright, nice, sunny Fall afternoon. When he showed me off in front of the building, my contact at Apple briefly wondered about Katie Cotton’s, Apple's PR Manager, car parked seemingly in a hurry at the curb. "Where she is, Steve Jobs is not far away", he said.

When I turned into the rental car return lot at San Francisco International 30 minutes later to return my car and check in for my trip back to Europe, I heard the news on the radio. Steve Jobs had died, an era had come to an end.

I never expected that I would be less than 10 miles away when it happened.

This past July we were fortunate enough to be a sponsor of the eighth annual Animation Block Party, the premier animation festival of the East Coast. This year's festival took place in Brooklyn at Rooftop Films and BAMcinématek, where thousands of filmmakers submitted their animated shorts for screening. Awards were given out for everything from Best in Show, to Original Design, Experimental Film, Minute or Under, Animation for Kids, and more.

As a sponsor, we donated an iStopMotion license to be given away at the festival. Our very own iStopMotion also made a big debut at this year's Animation Block Party as the program used to create the outro bumper for the festival, Person Pinball, by Aaron Hughes. The 2-minute long animation was created entirely with iStopMotion and has become hugely popular on the web with over 200,000 YouTube hits... and it was even featured on CBS News and in Wired Magazine! Watch the video here and see how human pinball takes over New York!

The guys at Boinx Headquarters in Germany had a few VERY hot days this past summer, so to beat the heat they decided to make an iStopMotion movie poking fun at how hot it really was. Bastian took care of the camera and director "stuff" and our summer intern Peter stars as the sole actor in the film. Unfortunately, poor Peter never got to have his ice cream...
